Rise of the Machines

At the start of a new yearling sale season all freshman sires begin on an equal footing, but as each sale passes and commercial judgement is delivered on their offspring, some will rise from the pack to make a positive statement.

The first son of Zoustar to go to stud, Aquis Farm’s Lean Mean Machine covered 147 mares in his first season at stud in Victoria at a fee of $17,600 and those resulting foals are packing a powerful punch at the sales.

The ball started rolling for Lean Mean Machine when he had a filly from Nashville Skyline sell for $240,000 at Magic Millions in Book 1 and two more yearlings sell in Book 2, fillies from Main Chance and Gibraltar Moon, for $130,000 and $110,000.

Sales action then moved to Sydney for Inglis Classic and Lean Mean Machine ended that record breaking sale as the leading first season sire by average with three yearlings averaging $225,000, a sum more than 12 times his 2019 service fee.

His top seller was the colt from Group III winning Exceed and Excel mare Kulgrinda that made $380,000 for Sledmere Stud when secured by Ellerslie Lodge/ Bryce Heys.

The half-brother to Group III placed Poseidon’s Pool was a successful pinhook having been bought for $110,000 at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale from the Glastonbury Farm draft.

Lean Mean Machine had another big win with Silverdale Farm’s colt from Eloquent Ruby that made $230,000 when knocked down to Lindsey Smith / Boomer Bloodstock. He too was a pinhook winner, sourced from the Erinvale Thoroughbreds draft at Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for $85,000.

The Lean Mean Machine show then rolled into Melbourne for the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale and again the son of Zoustar finished as leading first season sire by average with three yearlings averaging $198,333.

His best result at Oaklands was a colt from Innocent I Am that made $300,000 for Blue Gum Farm when bought by Griffiths de Kock Racing / Peter Ford Thoroughbreds. He is the second foal of a winning half-sister by Stratum to stakes-winners Innocent Gamble and Viking Legend.

Not far behind was Collingrove Stud’s colt from I’m a Flying Star that made $240,000 when snapped up by Clinton McDonald Racing. The colt comes from a sensational female family as his dam is a half-sister to the dam of stakes-winner Lady Jivago with Group I winners King's Legacy and Oohood appearing on the page along with leading sire Not a Single Doubt.

The family had an interesting update last weekend when Lady Jivago's first foal, $1.25 million Zoustar colt Zamborghini won on debut, read about him here.

Admirers of Lean Mean Machine will be pleased to note he has yearlings to be offered at upcoming sales NZB Karaka Yearling Sale, Magic Millions March Yearling Sale and Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, where 15 of his stock have been catalogued, click here to see them.

Lean Mean Machine stands at Aquis Queensland and for more information on this exciting young son of Zoustar please call one of the Aquis sales team - Jonathan Davies, Paul Knight or Marcus Heritage  - today!
