All Roads Lead to the Golden Slipper for Rebel Dane's Fireburn

Mark Smith - Saturday February 26

Laurel Oak Bloodstock's Rebel Dane filly Fireburn revelled in the bottomless conditions in Saturday's Group III Furphy Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Randwick to book her ticket for the Golden Slipper and become the first stakes-winner for So You Think as a broodmare sire.

With Jason Collett in the saddle, the Gary Portelli-trained filly came with a barnstorming finish to defeat the Extreme Choice filly She's Extreme by three-quarter length, with the Overshare filly Lady Laguna a further two and three-quarter lengths back in third.

It was the third consecutive win for the daughter of Rebel Dane, advancing her record to three wins from four starts with earnings of $237,250.

"Sensational, that's the only word I can say," Portelli said.

"I was worried in the run that they hadn't gone very quick, and she actually dipped about the 600m. She hit a bad spot and picked herself back up, and as soon as he aimed her up, it was all over.

t;She has come from being beaten at Warwick Farm to winning a Saturday, another Saturday and now a Group race. Phenomenal. "Thanks very much to (managing owner) Louis Mihalyka for the opportunity to train this filly by the stallion that means so much to me.

"We had so much fun with Rebel Dane, and I reckon this filly is well on her way to some big things.

"The forecast is looking like we're probably going to get a soft track no matter what. I was glad to see Sejardan gallop so well on the heavy track last night, he will go to the Todman next weekend, and hopefully, he will do what she just did, and we go to the races double nervous."

A Laurel Oak Bloodstock homebred, Fireburn is the first foal of the winning So You Think mare Mull Over, purchased by Laurel Oak for $22,000 from the Lime Country draft at the 2018 National Broodmare Sale.

Mull Over is a half-sister to dual Listed stakes-winner Galizani (Galileo), out of the Zabeel mare Zahani, a daughter of the Group 1 Flight Stakes winner Danarani Danehill).

Mull Over has a yearling colt by Hallowed Crown. She was covered by Pierata last spring after missing in 2020

Fireburn is the second stakes-winner for Laurel Oaks' dual Group 1 winner, Rebel Dane after Group III winner Subterranean.

The son of California Dane covered a career-high 49 mares at Glen Eden Stud in 2021 at a fee of $8,800.
