Is There a Group 1 for Paulele?

Mark Smith - Saturday February 5

Godolphin’s likeable Dawn Approach (IRE) colt Paulele loves Randwick where he is undefeated in five starts, the latest coming when leading at every call in Saturday’s Group III Petaluma Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m).

With Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle for the first time since the James Cummings-trained colt won his second start as a 2yo in December 2020, Paulele defeated the Fastnet Rock colt Ranch hand by a half-length with the Frankel colt Converge a further long neck back in third.

With his fourth stakes success, Paulele advances his record to six wins and two seconds from 11 starts with earnings of $677,200.

“Kerrin loves riding his horses like that. When they begin well, he lets them stride up and not disappoint them and that suited Paulele today,” Cummings said.

“He was fresh, a bit above himself, but he was not chasing a lure like the good colt last week (Anamoe).

“He just had to get into his stride, and when challenged by a couple of good horses in Converge and Ranch Hand, he was capable of lowering and sprinting hard and keeping his unbeaten record at Randwick intact.

“There’s no doubt the horse is going very well, and it is a matter for us now just to pick out a target and do our best to get him to win a race good enough to stand him on the roster.”

A three-quarter brother to the Group III VRC Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes winner Montsegur (New Approach) and a half-brother to Group III ATC Canonbury Stakes winner Tessera (Medaglia d'Oro), Paulele is one of seven winners from eight to race out of the Flying Spur mare Chatoyant.

A daughter of the blue hen Decidety (Last Tycoon), Chatoyant is a half-sister to Group 1 VRC Myer Classic winner Bonaria (Redoute's Choice), Group III winner Time Out (Rory's Jester) and the Group III winner and Group 1-placed Legally Bay (Snippets), the dam of Merchant Navy and Jolie Bay.

With three-stakes-winners to her credit, Chatoyant earned an honourable pension in February.

Her final foal is a yearling Exosphere filly named Chrysoberyl.
