Juvenile Trial Watch – Warwick Farm

Tara Madgwick - Monday January 10

Four heats for juveniles at the Warwick Farm trials on Monday morning produced some interesting winners including a $1million Not a Single Doubt colt and a Godolphin blueblood from their Champion 2YO Filly of 2013/2014 Earthquake.

Annabel Neasham has already tasted success with $1.8million Not a Single Doubt colt Man in the Mirror and she will be hoping to follow suit with Flashing Steel, another good looking colt by the same sire that fetched $1million at the Gold Coast last year when bought by Tony Fung Investments/Phoenix Thoroughbreds.

Fourth in two previous trials, one back in the spring and one last month, Flashing Steel was asked to do a bit more this morning with the last furlong his best. He cruised to the line for Jason Collett under a hold to win the 799m gallop by the best part of a length running away.

Bred and sold by Gerry Harvey’s Baramul Stud, Flashing Steel is the second foal of Medaglia Valore, a winning daughter of Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner and Group II winner Military Rose. Her first foal Shiriki (3f Exceed and Excel) won at Moe at her second start on December  30 and her third foal is a Snitzel filly that will be offered as Lot 250 at Magic Millions on Wednesday.

James Cummings would have been happy with the effort of Lonhro filly Sumatra, who closed late for Kerrin McEvoy to score a narrow win over Street Smarts and Wild Calm, who both contested the Group III ATC Gimcrack Stakes.

Sumatra is the fourth foal from Exceed and Excel’s former brilliant juvenile Earthquake, who won the Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes and was second in the Golden Slipper. Her only foal to race has been handy metro winner Namazu, but Sumatra might have something to offer.

Other heat winners were: Deep Expectation (Deep Field) and Northumbria (Exceed and Excel).
