Kubrick Transforms into a Winning Machine

Mark Smith - Sunday December 26

After going winless for two years and twenty starts since winning the $1million Bondi Stakes at Randwick in 2019, the striking Shooting To Win gelding Kubick has become a winning machine.

On Boxing Day at Doomben, the 5yo Chris Waller-trained gelding made it three wins in his last four starts with a maiden stakes success in the Listed Bernborough Stakes.

Given a sweet ride by Larry Cassidy, Kubrick defeated the Charm Spirit (GB) mare Charmmebaby by three-quarters of a length with the veteran Fastnet Rock gelding The Harrovian a half head back in third.

The Star Thoroughbred colour-bearer advances his record to six wins, four seconds, and four thirds from 31 starts with earnings of  $1,127,650.

Stable representative Brett Killion said a heavy track had been the undoing of Kubrick at his last start at Doomben, where he finished third.

“He appreciated the drier track today. He was bolting in the run and got the result,” Killion said.

uo;He became the butt of all jokes for 18 months when he was running on, running on. Something turned him on, whether it was the addition of blinkers, and suddenly he has confidence and likes winning.

“He has been a great horse for Denise Martin and Star Thoroughbreds and a loyal group of owners.”

A $250,000 Inglis Premier purchase for Star  Thoroughbreds from the Two Bays Farm draft, Kubrick is the best of two winners from three to race from the Fastnet Rock mare Alcatraz.

Alcatraz was purchased by Neville Parnham for $280,000 out of the Segenhoe Stud draft at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

She is sister to the stakes-placed Rock Of Fortune and a half-sister to Listed winner Chic Choice (Redoute's Choice). They are out of the stakes-placed Dr Grace mare Fortunata, a half-sister to the blue hen Twiglet the dam of Easy Rocking, Fairy King Prawn and Crevette who is the dam of dual Group 1 Cosmic Endeavour.

Alcatraz has a 2yo coly by Written Tycoon named Maxinum Control, who was a $625,000 purchase by James Bester from the Silverdale Farm draft at the 2021 Magic Millions.

Alcatraz has missed the past two seasons.

Shooting To Win has eleven catalogued for the Magic Millions and ten at the Inglis Classic.
