Third Group I win for Gingernuts

Darryl Sherer - Sunday September 24

Opie Bosson says Gingernuts has plenty of improvement to come following his win in Saturday's Group I Windsor Park Plate (1600m) on a slow track at Hastings.

Bosson won the Group I New Zealand Derby (2400m) and Group I Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on Gingernuts last season and said the son of Iffraaj is still learning.

"He's an exciting horse and he's still learning his trade," Bosson told NZ Racing Desk after Gingernuts ($2.90 fav) prevailed over Close Up ($12.80) by a short neck with Kawi ($6.10) a further 1 1/4-lengths away in third.

"I was a bit worried when he started gawking around and he only knuckled down when the other horse came at him," Bosson said.

"I got in behind Kawi and he gave me a beautiful track into the race - there's so much improvement left in him."

Co-trainer Jamie Richards said a discussion with fellow trainer Stephen Autridge and Te Akau principal David Ellis would confirm where Gingernuts races next.

"We won't be making any decisions today and we'll sit down tomorrow and have a chat," Richards said.

"The horse still isn't 100 percent in the coat just yet. He's a staying type of horse and to win over a mile at weight-for-age as a four-year-old is a great effort."

Sportsbet rate Gingernuts a $15 chance for the Caulfield Cup.
