Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday December 7

Magic Millions favourite Coolangatta tuned up at the Randwick trials on Tuesday morning taking on older rivals and winning with plenty in hand, but she was not the only interesting juvenile heat winner of the morning with the full sister to Profiteer showing all the brilliance of her lightning fast brother.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained Coolangatta stepped out over 1050m and did everything right to win by half a length.

A $280,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Milburn Creek draft for her trainer, the daughter of Written Tycoon looks to be working back towards peak condition following her impressive debut win in the Group III ATC Gimcrack Stakes in October.

Three heats run over the shorter 740m trip for two year-olds were won by Asteria (Capitalist), Miss Hellfire (Hellbent) and Toronomica (Toronado (IRE).

The fastest and visually most impressive was the Mark Newnham trained Asteria, who jumped on terms, but was quickly into stride and charged to the lead where she stayed for Rachel King.

Running the Laurel Oak Bloodstock colours, Asteria dashed right away and won by nearly four lengths in 43.25 seconds.

Bred by SF Bloodstock and partners, Asteria is a full sister to Inglis Millennium winner Profiteer and is the second foal from Group III placed Snitzel mare Athena Lass.

Newgate Farm will offer the third foal from Athena Lass, a filly by I Am Invincible as Lot 392 at Inglis Classic.

The Peter and Paul Snowden trained Miss Hellfire was a trial winner back in October and the daughter of Hellbent looked well educated in this performance jumping well and travelling in the lead before surging to a length and a half win.

Miss Hellfire was a modest $60,000 Magic Millions purchase for Triple Crown Syndications and the Newgate bred filly is bred to be good being a half-sister to ill-fated stakes-winner Xtreme Time and US Group I placed colt Caracaro.

Trained by Richard and Michael Freedman, Toronado colt Toronomica showed good dash from the gates, but travelled deep covering ground throughout and despite racing greenly was still there at the finish to win by a head.

Bred by Gilgai Farm Stud Manager Kelly Skillecorn, Toronomica made $220,000 at Inglis Premier and is not dissimilar in appearance to Gilgai Farm’s other star Toronado graduate Masked Crusader.

Toronomica is from Group II placed Choisir filly Anatomica, who was also fourth in the Golden Slipper, so he’s certainly bred to show speed.
