Second Stakes for Snitzel's Vulpine

Mark Smith - Saturday November 27

With a Group III already in the bag, the tough-as-teak Snitzel mare Vulpine would be an attractive proposition for any stallion in the land, but the Brad Widdup-trained mare has plenty left to offer on the track.

With her favoured conditions on a rain-sodden track at Rosehill, Vulpine made every post a winner for Jay Ford in Saturday's Listed Starlight Stakes.

The five-year-old daughter of Snitzel defeated the dream Ahead gelding Dream Circle by three-quarters of a length, with Mossman gelding Tambo's Mate a further one and a half lengths back in third.

It advances the record of Vulpine to six four two from 25 starts with earnings of $349,640.

'It takes her about five runs to come right. I don't know what it is," Widdup said.

"Her work has been sharp at home. She is just a terrific mare. I put the winkers on today. I didn't want to go blinkers. I think she has had 25 starts, so it took me a bit of time to do it.

"It's great to get a stakes winner, especially for Brad Hunt and Benny Vassallo. It's fantastic. They are big supporters of mine, and I love getting a winner for them.

"She's a Snitzel, has won a couple of stakes races. So the price keeps going up.

"She is a Magic Millions horse, and there is no reason to stop now, so we will keep punching on."

Vulpine a $340,000 Magic Millions yearling

Consigned by Willow Park Stud to the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Vulpine was bought by Andrew Williams B/S /Millsy Girls Racing/BK Racing for $340,000.

She is the best of two winners from three to race out of the Elusive Quality (USA) mare Elusive Leone.

Purchased by James Harron Bloodstock for $550,000 at the 2015 National broodmare Sale, Elusive Leone is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner and successful sire Star Witness, the dual Group III winner Nostradamus, and the Group 1-placed Lady Lupino.

Sadly, Elusive Leone died in 2017. Her final foal is the recently retired 4yo Sebring mare Eight Diamonds, the winner of two races at Canterbury.
