Juvenile Trial Watch – Rosehill

Tara Madgwick - Monday November 8

There were three heats for juveniles at Rosehill on Monday morning that produced winners for Snitzel, Rubick and Spirit of Boom, who sired the fastest winner of the three.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained colt Command Approved won his previous trial over 740 m last month and looked even more impressive this time around when stepped up to 900m.

He worked forward from a wide gate to lead and was strong all the way up the straight to win by a length and three-quarters.

Command Approved was a $170,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Newgate Farm draft for James Bester Bloodstock/Vantage Thoroughbreds and is a half-brother to stakes-placed Nitrous from Group II placed Stratum mare Flamboyant Lass, a sister to Group II winner Atttention.

The current crop of Spirit of Boom  two year-olds were conceived at the fee of $55,000, which is the first year in which his fee rose from his initial fee of $11,000.

This is his biggest foal crop to date and the quality of mare he covered that year is a marked improvement on all that has gone before and already Spirit of Boom has a current season juvenile stakes-winner Get in the Spirit, who may well be one of many.

The next heat went to Rubick filly Evening Star, who led all the way to win by half a length and is trained by Gerald Ryan, who trained her sire.

Retained to race by her breeder, Evening Star is a half-sister to Group III placed Vanuatu and three other winners being from Fastnet Rock mare Tropicana Lady, an unraced sister to Group I winner Irish Lights, the dam of Group winners Omei Sword and Lipizzaner.

Closing off well for second in the trial carrying the Spendthrift colours was Pierro filly Emelia Romagna, who was having her first trial and is from Group I winning sprinter Griante, who sadly died last month. Her final foal is a colt by The Autumn Sun.

The final juvenile heat was won by the Mark Newnham trained Snitzel filly Swift Sweet, a half-sister to stakes-winning sprinter Ballistic Lover.

Having her second trial, she led all the way and was well held together winning by a short head over fast finishing Negation, a daughter of Hellbent.

Swift Sweet was passed in at Magic Millions and retained to race by her breeders the Kolivos family and carries their colours made famous by Champion 2YO Pierro.
