Exceed And Excel's Oxley Road Captures Caulfield Sprint

Mark Smith - Saturday October 16

Oxley Road completed a banner day at Caulfield for the Peter Moody stable when he ran down the determined Malkovich in the $300,000 Group II McCafe Caulfield Sprint (1200m).

Ridden by Blaike McDougall, the 4yo son of Exceed And Excel defeated Malkovich (Choisir) by three-quarters of a length, with Curran (Night Of Thunder) a further two and three-quarter lengths back in third.

The Group III Zeditave Stakes winner at Caulfield in February, lightly raced Oxley Road, advances his record to three wins, a second and a third from six starts with earnings of $351,950.

“The support since I’ve come down here in the last seven weeks has been overwhelming. Especially from this man here today, Peter Moody,” McDougall said.

“He’s an opportunist, quite like myself, so I’m just very thankful.

“It didn’t feel like we went a gallop, he’s a fast horse.

“Just when I let All Banter go they steadied, not much but enough for him to half want to overdo it, but he’s a classy horse.

“Everyone has a high opinion of him. To do that today so easily, when we hit the front he half clocked off, so they haven’t got to the bottom of him yet.”

Purchased by Singapore-based trainer Stephen Grey for $125,000 2019 Magic Millions, Oxley Raod’s stock shot up a short time later when his brother Exceedance bludgeoned the opposition by seven lengths at his career debut at Wyong.

Oxley Road a $125,000 Magic Millions yearling

Exceedance went on to win the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes before embarking on a stallion career at Vinery Stud.

Oxley Road was bred by Nick Vass and is the one of three stakes-winners stakes from as many to race out of the stakes-winning Thorn Park mare Bonnie Mac whose Sebring filly, Mac 'N' Cheese, who won the Listed SAJC Oaklands Plate.

Bonnie Mac was sold by Newgate at the 2019 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale, fetching $375,000 when bought by Allam Racing/Andrew Williams Bloodstock when in foal to Capitalist.

The resultant colt was catalogued for the 2021 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by Yarraman Park, with Hickman Racing making the final bid of $1,050,000.

Sadly, Bonnie Mac died in May last year.
