Another G1 Winner out of an Aussie Mare on the World Stage

Mark Smith - Sunday September 19

Walton Street, a son of the 2006 Group II VRC Hilton International Stakes and Listed Werribee Cup winner Brom Felinity (Encosta De Lago), completed a grand day on the international stage for Godolphin with a five and three-quarter romp in the Grade 1 Canadian International at Woodbine.

Ridden by Frankie Dettori for trainer Charlie Appleby, the 7yo son of Cape Cross (IRE) defeated Desert Encounter (Halling) with Primo Touch (Midas Touch) a further four and three-quarter lengths back in third.

Walton Street has been a late bloomer.

At four he placed in the Group III Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury and at five was runner-up in the Group III Deauville Prix de Reux and Listed Newmarket Fred Archer Stakes.

He started just twice last year, winning the Listed Newmarket Godolphin Stakes.

This year in Dubai, Walton Street won the Group II Meydan Dubai City of Gold,  Listed  Meydan Dubai Racing Club Classic, and was fourth in the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic.

Walton Street becomes the 17th G1 winner from a daughter of Encosta De Lago

He prepped for the Canadian International with a third in the Group 1 Berlin-Hoppegarten Grosser Preis Von Berlin.

"I think, to be honest, it worked out perfectly how we thought it would," assistant trainer Alex Merriman told The Bloodhorse.

"Frankie had his game plan and always knew he was going to kick on. He's done it nicely, I was delighted with him.

“We're delighted for the horse to win a Grade 1. He's been with us a long time, and he's a favorite in the yard."

Brom Felinity (Encosta De Lago) had four foals in Australia before her export to Britain in 2013.

Two of the four were winners led by Macavity (Street Cry) who was a 6-time winner from 67 starts.

A daughter of the Group II VRC Edward Manifold Stakes winner Brompton Cross (El Qahira) Brom Felinity is a sister to the Delago Brom, winner of the Group 1 VRC Australian Guineas, Group III Carbine Club Stakes and Listed  MRC Vain Stakes and was runner-up in the Group 1 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes.

A half-sister to Brom Felinity, Brompton's Girl (Runyon), is the granddam of Group II MVRC Moonee Valley Classic winner My Poppette (Snippetson), group II WRC Wellington Guineas winner Neo (One Cool Cat) and Hong Kong Derby winner Ping Hai Star (Nom Du Jeu)

Brom Felinity was sold by Godolphin to Ebor Bloodstock for 15,000gns at Tattersalls in 2016.

Her foal by Oasis Dream sold for 20,000gns at Tattersalls last year.

Godolphin struck again at the highest level in North America on Saturday with the 3yo Dubawi gelding Yibir in the jockey Club Invitational at Belmont.

Ridden by Jamie Spencer Yibir defeated the Frankel gelding Soldier Rising by two lengths with the Quality Road gelding Slicked Back a neck back in third.
