Flying Artie has made an impressive start to the new season and has taken an early lead on the second crop sires list by winners and earnings after racking up his eighth winner on Monday at Tamworth with an eye catching debut winner trained by William Freedman.

Three year-old gelding Ang Pow was a short priced favourite for the all aged 1200m maiden and gave his older rivals a galloping lesson.

He bolted clear to win by more than four lengths in a dominant display that drew high praise from his trainer.

“I think he’s the best horse I have in my barn,” said William Freedman.

“I thought the only thing that could beat him today was being green.”

Bred by Diamond Park Breeding and Racing, Ang Pow was a $25,000 Inglis Premier purchase for Blackwater Bloodstock from the Diamond Park Breeding and Racing draft and was withdrawn from the Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale last year.

He is the fourth winner from five foals to race from stakes-winning Redoute’s Choice mare Whoever, a half-sister to stakes-winner Speedy Bell, the dam of Group winners Silverstream, Speedy Natalie and stakes-winner Calanda.

Diamond Park Breeding and Racing sold a weanling by Grunt from Whoever for $105,000 at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale earlier this year and the mare is now in foal to Starcraft.

Flying Artie stands at Newgate Farm this spring at a fee of $33,000.
