One To Watch - Cranbourne

Mark Smith - Sunday September 12

Following a first-up third behind the promising Draft Day (Tivaci) at Sandown, the Wolf Cry gelding Prowling went off an odds-on favourite to open his account at over 1200m at Cranbourne on Sunday in a manner that suggests there are better days ahead.

It was a back to back double for trainer Greg Eurell and jockey Craig Williams after the Testa Rossa filly Cuban Link broke her maiden over (1400m).

One of the best to begin, Prowling took a trail behind the pacesetting Collision. It was a move that looked likely to backfire when Our Boy Bryan and Audrey Girl made a three-wide line around the home turn.

Williams was able to extricate Prowling into clean air and he charged home to defeat Our Boy Bryan (Unencumbered) by one and three-quarter lengths with Audrey Girl (Fastnet Rock) a short-head back in third.

Bred by his trainer, Prowling is a half-brother to stable stalwart Great Dutchess (Canford Cliffs), a 5-time winner of over $400,000.

His dam Great Dame (Danerich) won twice in a 4-stat career and was fourth in the Group III The Vanity at Flemington behind Shopaholic, Mosheen and Angel Of Mercy.

Great Dame’s dam Star Opera (Salieri) is a half-sister to Celestial Option (Clear Choice), the dam of Group 1 VRC Australian Cup and group 1 MRC Toorak Handicap winner Roman Arch.

Great Dame has a 2yo colt by Trust In The Gust and was one of 34 mares to visit the courageous Cliff’s Edge last spring.

Larneuk Stud’s Street Cry stallion Wolf Cry has made a fine start to his stud career off limited numbers.

His son General Wolffe was a winner at Doomben last season and placed in the recent Tattersall's Life Member Stakes at Eagle Farm, while Wolves was third to Arcaded in the Group II Blue Diamond Prelude.

Wolf Cry stands at Larneuk Stud for a fee of $6,600.
