Guineas Contenders Highlight Wednesday Meetings

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday August 24

Maiden events in Melbourne and Sydney on Wednesday feature a raft of three year-olds entered for the big Guineas races in Melbourne including a colt that is the most expensive yearling sired by Deep Field.

The three year-old maiden at Sandown has plenty of interesting runners but none more so than unraced Deep Field colt Mars Mission, who runs in the colours of Alan Bell, who also trained his sire.

Trained by Team Hawkes as was Deep Field, Mars Mission was bought for $800,000 from the Attunga Stud draft at Magic Millions and is the most expensive yearling by his sire ever sold.

$800,000 Magic Millions purchase Mars Mission.

Mars Mission is a sibling to Group III winner Sun City, stakes-winner Parlophone and stakes-placed Spin and his stakes-winning dam Roulettes has had four to race all winners, so Mars Mission should hopefully keep her record perfect.

On face value, Mars Mission may lack the pedigree to run a strong mile, but he is bred on the exact same cross as Aysar, who finished a close second in the Caufield Guineas last year.

There are plenty of good judges tipping Maurice (Jpn) to have a big season with his three year-olds and that could include Achira, whose only two starts last preparation were solid in good company.

Trained by Lee and Cherie Curtis, Achira was a $140,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Coolmore draft for Mystery Downs/John Foote Bloodstock.

Achira was a $140,000 Magic Millions purchase.

Achira is from winning O’Reilly mare Swift Lady, who is a grand-daughter of the former glamour grey mare of the eighties, who proved her worth at stud as the dam of super popular grey $1.3 million earner Le Zagaletta.

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott take the wraps off first starter Omni Man, a half-brother by I Am Invincible to Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign and G2 Silver Slipper winner Time to Reign.

His dam Courgette has had four to race all winners and trials would indicate Omni Man can add to the tally.
