Second Group II for Sierra Sue

Mark Smith - Saturday August 14

Fresh off a win in the Mildura Cup, the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained mare Sierra Sue made the trip to Caulfield on Saturday to capture the $300,000 Group II PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m).

Ridden by John Allen the 5yo daughter of Darci Brahma defeated the fast-finishing Angel Of Truth (Animal kingdom) by one and a quarter lengths with Red Can Man (Gingerbread Man) a short-head back in third.

“I think that trip to Mildura brought this little filly on,” Young said.

“We always thought she had another good preparation in her and she showed that today.

“I thought there was plenty of improvement in her after she ran at Flemington. I said to (part owner) Ozzie (Kheir) get her on a float to Mildura, it’s a $100,000 race.

“There’s a Memsie in a couple of weeks so we will talk to the owners. But I would love to be back here in a couple of weeks.”

The winner of the Group II Blazer Stakes at Flemington last October, Sierra Sue advances he record to seven wins and a second from 16 starts with earnings of $513,625.

That is a handy return on the $2,000 it cost to secure the then unbroken Sierra Sue at the 2019 Karaka May sale.

Now owned by some of the stables high profile clients, Sierra Sue is the best of five winners from six to race out of the Centaine mare Centree.

Centree is a half-sister to the stakes-placed Miss Puzzle the dam of the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks and Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes winner Fashion Plate.

After not being covered in 2018 and 2019 the 18yo Centree visited Mongolian Khan last spring.
