Mark Smith - Wednesday August 11

An important, if belated, win for Shosha at Doomben on Wednesday as the Deep Impact (JPN) mare made the first instalment on her $1,100,000 purchase price.

Ridden by Stephanie Thornton for champion trainer Tony Gollan, Shosha led at every call to defeat gentle Prince (Casino Prince) by one and a quarter-lengths with Hats (Better Than Ready) a further half-length back in third.

Shosha was making her second start for Gollan after three unsuccessful starts for Chris Waller in Sydney.

Carrying the colours of Linda Huddy’s Peachester Lodge, the 5yo daughter of Deep Impact was purchased by Waller Racing / G Mulcaster from the Arrowfield Stud draft at the 2018 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Shosha is the fourth winner from as many starters for the top-class mare Alverta.

The daughter of Flying Spur was offered at the 2005 William Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, where she was passed in when bidding stopped at $20,000, well short of her $100,000 reserve.

Trained by Paul Messara, Alverta built a solid record on the track before being covered by Charge Forward in 2009.

When she failed to conceive, Alverta returned to the track, winning the Group 1 Coolmore Classic for Tye Angland.

It was then on to Europe where she failed to flatter behind Starspangledbanner in the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot before a fighting third to Starspangledbanner and Equiano (FR) in the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket.

Alverta died in March 2019.

Her final foal is an unraced 3yo gelding by Dundeel named Alverdun.

Purchased by First Light Racing/Paul Willetts for $100,000 at the 2020 National Yearling Sale, Alverdun is in training with Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young.

Shosha will have to carry the Alverta legacy in Australia. The daughter of Flying Spur had two fillies.

Her first was a $500,000 daughter of More Than Ready (USA) named Tosen Alverta

A 5-time winner in Japan, Tosen Alverta has a yearling colt by Deep Impact’s Group 1 Mile Championship winner Tosen Ra and a filly foal by Italian Derby winner Mac Mahon (ITY).
