The owners of REBEL DANE, in conjunction with Glen Eden Stud, have agreed to sell Lifetime Breeding Rights in the stallion.
This is a rare offering in a sire that has already proven himself and shown that he is able to upgrade his mares to produce a Group winner.
“We are keen to give the horse the opportunity to keep improving the number and quality of mares that he covers,” said Managing Owner Louis Mihalyka.
The Lifetime Breeding Rights will allow two nominations in 2021 and two in 2022, and then reverting to one nomination per year thereafter. Any owners with mares booked to REBEL DANE this year can simply send another mare to qualify for the Lifetime Breeding Right.
With the horse currently standing at $8,000 +GST, the Lifetime Breeding Right at $16,000 +GST offers great value with plenty of potential upside. His Group Three-winning son SUBTERRANEAN is targeting more stakes races this spring, while REBEL DANE also has a number of other quality three-year-olds coming through.

A two-time Group One winner who beat Chautauqua and Buffering on the track, REBEL DANE is proving to be a rising star in the breeding barn.
Despite limited opportunities, he has achieved remarkable results, producing 26 live foals in his first season for six runners including three individual winners – an outstanding strike rate of 50 per cent.
His progeny can gallop. Group Three Ken Russell Memorial Classic hero SUBTERRANEAN is a prime example of the stamp he is putting on his offspring.
Defeating Sydney metropolitan winner Ranch Hand in the Queensland feature, SUBTERRANEAN went on to finish a fine fifth to Converge in the Group One J J Atkins when he was caught on the worst part of the track.
The colt recently turned in an excellent trial behind Group One performers Fasika and Quick Thinker despite heading to the trials a week earlier than anticipated, and trainer Matthew Dunn is in no doubt SUBTERRANEAN has returned better again this preparation.
“He’s a lovely horse to look at. He is very well balanced, strong and really quiet. He’s like a gelding,” Dunn said.
“I’m excited for the spring because he’s improved a bit. Physically, he’s much better and he’s done really well.”
Dunn has ambitious plans for the three-year-old, who will follow a path through Sydney’s black-type races with the Group One Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick in October his main goal.
“He’ll go to the Up And Coming (Stakes) first-up, then we’ll adjust his program moving through, but ultimately he’ll be getting to the Spring Champion Stakes. That’s where we’d like to take him,” Dunn said.
REBEL DANE has achieved outstanding results despite serving a modest first book of mares. SUBTERRANEAN’S dam Caves sold for just $1,000 as a broodmare prospect.
This daughter of Bernardini, which created inbreeding to Seattle Slew, was a country and picnic campaigner with four wins from 67 starts.

The stallion’s former trainer Gary Portelli has two of REBEL DANE’S progeny. One is a two-year-old and the other is dual Sydney metropolitan placegetter Rebel Shadow.
He describes the stock of his one-time stable star as “strong” and says REBEL DANE is producing outstanding types.
“I’m disappointed I haven’t got more,” Portelli said.
REBEL DANE has not had major exposure at the marquee sales but one of his only yearlings to go under the hammer this year, a colt out of bush-placed Husson mare Pronto Bella, exceeded expectations.
He sold for $110,000 to renowned judges Hannover Lodge with Golden Slipper-winning trainers Michael and Richard Freedman the underbidders.
Hannover Lodge owner Hinnerk Hueppe said he was drawn to the Rebel Dane youngster from the first time he saw him.
“He seemed strong, balanced and forward. He was a stand-out,” Hueppe said.
“We looked at about 600 yearlings for that sale so we really liked him and therefore we paid a price accordingly.
“The sire hasn’t got many progeny on the ground or in the sales ring but we were happy to spend our money. If there were more, I would have bought two.”
The REBEL DANE colt will be breezed up at the Inglis Ready To Run Sale later this year but Hueppe says he and his partners will happily retain him to race if they don’t find the right buyer at the right price.
And Hueppe won’t hesitate to snap up another son or daughter of REBEL DANE – if he can get his hands on one.
“It’s very rare for Australia to find a sire that is a successful racehorse to six, seven-years-old, has won over $2 million in prizemoney and been successful on different surfaces and over different distances,” Hueppe said.
“That’s why we were happy to take a punt.”
A grandson of the mighty Danehill out of a daughter of More Than Ready, REBEL DANE shapes as a particularly attractive match for Northern Dancer, Seattle Slew, Buckpasser and Mr Prospector line mares.
He is a horse who raced in the best of company during a rich era for Australian sprinters. He won his first three career starts in Sydney and thereafter all of his starts were in stakes grade. He was successful over distances ranging from 1100m to 1400m and finished fourth in the 2013 Randwick Guineas the only time he was stretched to a mile. His last 31 starts were exclusively in Group One or Group Two company.
Retiring sound and with prizemoney of over $2.4 million, he was one of racing’s quiet achievers. A tough and dogged campaigner with a stunning turn of foot, REBEL DANE has enormous potential to develop into one of the country’s best-value sires.
