Brazen Beau Filly Zapateo has a Bit To Live Up To

Mark Smith - Saturday July 31

The spring riches await for the talented Brazen Beau filly Zapateo who defeated a talented field of 2yo fillies over 1000m at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Given a sweet ride by Damien Oliver, Zapateo came with a well-timed finish to defeat the Deep Field filly Her Empire by a long neck with the heavily backed Hinchinbrook filly Sweet Mary three-quarter length back in third.

It was the second win in three starts for Zapateo, who opened her account at her career debut at Geelong on June 18 before a half-length second to Libiamo at Caulfield on July 10.

Oliver warned that the filly might be close to the end of her first preparation.

“I did think she would just win last start. She didn’t have an excuse there, but if I learnt anything, it was to be a little more patient on her,” Oliver said.

“She won well, but it was her third run. There might be one more left in her, but I would suggest to nurse her through one more or come back later in the spring. I will see what James (Cummings) thinks.”

Zapateo has a similar back story to Tamerlane. who won earlier in the day at Randwick.

Tamerlane is a grandson of Woodlands Stud purchase Forensics while Zapateo is from another prominent Woodlands family inherited by Darley.

Also among them was the Barathea (IRE) mare Saddler’s Silk, who placed in the Group 1 QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes. A sister to dual Listed stakes-winner and Group 1 QTC TJ Smith Classic runner-up Barawin, Saddler’s Silk was joined by her daughters Patina (Anabaa) and Jerezana (Lonhro).

Patina won two races and is the dam of Godolphin’s high-class Viridine (Poet’s Voice), whose six stakes wins included the Group II ATC Roman Consul Stakes while banking $1,214,390.

Zapateo is the fifth of six foals left by Jerezana before her tragic death in 2019. Winner of the Listed Ramornie Handicap, Jerezana proved to be among the elite broodmares at Darley.

Her first foal is the stakes-placed Commands gelding Badajoz who has won seven and placed in 11 of his 40 starts with earnings of $625,625.

The second foal of Jerezana is the high-class Street Cry (IRE) gelding Osborne Bulls, whose nine wins from 20 starts include the Group II VRC TAB Stakes, Listed Regal Roller Stakes and Listed Luskin Star Stakes. He was runner-up in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap, Group 1 All-Aged Stakes, Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes, and third in The Everest. The son of Street Cry (IRE) contributed $2,871,760 to the Godolphin coffers.

The third foal of Jerezana is the Exceed And Excel gelding Sedition, a 6-time winner of $349,675.

Fouth foal Mercury, a 4yo brother to Zapateo, is a 2-time winner of $82,330.

The final foal of Jerezana is the rising 2yo Street Boss (USA) colt Zaragoza.

Brazen Beau will stand the forthcoming season at Darley, Victoria, at a fee of $49,500.
