Glorious Stakes Double for No Nay Never

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday July 28

The last Australian bred foals by Coolmore shuttler No Nay Never (USA) are about to become yearlings, the Scat Daddy stallion making news overnight when siring two stakes-winners at Glorious Goodwood including Alcohol Free, who won the Group I Sussex Stakes (1m).

Three year-olds dominated in the Sussex in the absence of star older miler Palace Pier with the Andrew Balding trained filly scoring a commanding victory over two time Group I winning colt Poetic Flare (Dawn Approach) with Frankel filly Snow Lantern, a last start Group I winner, in third place

She powered clear under Oisin Murphy to win by a length and three-quarters taking her overall record to five wins and two placings from eight starts with three of those wins coming in Group I races.

“It's no easy task taking on the colts and the older horses, but to do it in that style is just fantastic. She's a class act and on this day she's as good as anything,” said Balding.

Purchased for 40,000 euros at the 2018 Goffs November Foal Sale, Alcohol Free runs for Jeff Smith and is a half-sister to stakes-winner Alexander James from winning Hard Spun mare Plying.

Alcohol Free brought up a stakes-winning double for No Nay Never following on from two year-old colt Armor, who won the Group III Molecomb Stakes (5f).

A winner on debut and fifth in a Listed race at Royal Ascot, the Richard Hannon trained colt raced away to win by three and three-quarter lengths over Fearby (Havana Gold) with Australian owned Brazen Beau colt Boonie in third place.

“I've not made too many flash entries for him but we'll look at something like the Prix Morny now, or maybe the Flying Childers,” said Richard Hannon.

"He'll get six furlongs and we'll have to have a go at a Group 1 over that trip, but he's not a big horse. This is his year and, if he makes into a good three-year-old, then great, but he's good enough now."

Armor runs for Al Shaqab Racing and was purchased for 55,000 euros from the Arqana October Yearling Sale.

He is the best of two winners from winning High Chaparral mare Hestia, who comes from the family of Group II winner Pinson.

Armor is the 31st stakes-winner for No Nay Never, who stood for 125,000 euros at Coolmore Ireland this year.
