Trueshan Wins G1 Goodwood Gold Cup

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday July 27

The Group I Goodwood Gold Cup (2m) was run overnight without champion stayer Stradivarius, who was not given the chance to win it for a fifth time with wet ground forcing his withdrawal.

Victory in the staying test went to five year-old Planteur gelding Trueshan, who provided his trainer Alan King with his first Group I win.

Ridden by Hollie Doyle, Trueshan bolted clear to win by nearly four lengths taking his overall record to eight wins from 14 starts with this race his third Black Type success.

“Trueshan is a superstar on this ground. We weren't going very quick early on and he was a little keen but I just let him slide up on to the girth of the leader and he took up the bridle on me. The further he went the better and he found another gear,” said Hollie Doyle.

Bought for 31,000 guineas from the Tattersalls Breeze Up Sale, Trueshan is the best of five winners from Shao Line and is the first Group I winner for his sire Planteur, a Group I winning son of Danehill Dancer.
