New Winner for Capitalist

Tara Madgwick - Sunday July 25

With just a week of the season to run, Capitalist hit 20 Australian two year-old winners on Sunday when the Gary Portelli trained Silver Thorn scored a narrow victory in a blanket finish at Gosford on Sunday.

Placed at his first two runs back from a spell, Silver Thorn had fitness on his side and was strong to the line arriving just in time for Ellen Hennessy to post a neck win in the 1200m maiden.

A $260,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Fernrigg Farm draft for Laurel Oak Bloodstock, Silver Thorn was bred by Henderson Racing and Wayne Cook and is the first winner for Group III winning Not a Single Doubt mare The Grey Flash.

Silver Thorn as a yearling.

The Grey Flash has a weanling colt to follow by Deep Field and is in foal to another of the Newgate Farm young gun sires in Brutal. She was on-sold in the Newgate Consignment at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale this year picked by Stonehouse Thoroughbreds for $275,000.

Silver Thorn is the 21st first crop winner (one in NZ) for Capitalist, who has sired four stakes-winners headed by Group I winner Captivant and an additional seven stakes horses.

A Golden Slipper winning son of Written tycoon, Capitalist stands at a fee of $99,000 at Newgate this spring.
