Vancouver Filly Tough and Talented

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday July 21

One of the busiest and soundest horses in the Chris Waller stable, Vancouver filly Canadian Spice was having her 16th start for the season at Randwick on Wednesday and came home a winner to take her overall earnings within a whisker of $200,000.

Stakes placed on debut at two, Canadian Spice took a while to break her maiden, but has been very consistent this year finishing top five in nearly every start and claiming her third victory today.

In contrast to her previous run when Canadian Spice blew the start and found herself back in the field, this time she jumped smoothly for James McDonald and led all the way to win the Benchmark 72 event over 1550m by more than a length as favourite.

“She got into a good rhythm and likes bowling along in front and gave me a good kick off the corner,” said McDonald.

A $600,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Coolmore draft for Woppitt Bloodstock / Hermitage Thoroughbreds, Canadian Spice was foaled and raised at Coolmore and is the fourth winner from five foals to race from stakes-winning General Nediym mare Paprika.

Canaidan Spice was a $600,000 Inglis Easter yearling.

Paprika produced a full sister to Canadian Spice last spring.

Canadian Spice is one of 46 Australian winners this season for Vancouver, who stands at Coolmore at a fee of $22,000 this spring.
