17th Group I Winner for Frankel

Tara Madgwick - Friday July 9

Frankel has been enjoying an amazing year adding a new Group I winner to his resume overnight in the UK when Snow Lantern captured the Group I Falmouth Stakes (1m) at Newmarket.

Three year-old fillies dominated the race, which is also for older mares, filling the trifecta with Snow Lantern defeating Mother Earth (Zoffany), who won the Group I Newmarket 1,000 Guineas with Royal Ascot Coronation Stakes winner Alcohol Free (No Nay Never) in third place.

The Richard Hannon trained Snow Lantern scored by half a length under Sean Levey taking her overall record to two wins and three placings from five starts with this victory her first in a Black Type race.

“Snow Lantern will get a mile and a quarter I think. She is in Nassau and the Sussex Stakes. I'd probably say she would go to the fillies' race. She is also in the Juddmonte International. I'm very hopeful she will stay in training next year. I love her,” said Richard Hannon.

A homebred for Rockliffe Stud, Snow Lantern is the best of three winners from outstanding Red Clubs filly Sky Lantern, who was a four time Group I winner and should have won five if not beaten in the Falmouth Stakes in controversial circumstances.

She was carried across the track by the eventual winner Elusive Kate and beaten a neck.

Snow Lantern is the 73rd stakes-winner for Frankel and is his 17th Group I winner, the champion son of Galileo enjoying a stakes double on Friday with The Queen’s homebred three year-old filly Light Refrain taking out the Group III William Hill Summer Stakes (6f) at York.
