G1 Commonwealth Cup Win for Campanelle

Tara Madgwick - Friday June 18

Winner of the Group II Queen Mary Stakes (5f) at Royal Ascot last year, quality Kodiac filly Campanelle again showed her class overnight winning the Group I Commonwealth Cup (6f) again the colts, but her victory was not without drama.

The Wesley Ward trained filly was making her first appearance for 2021 after closing out a successful juvenile season with a fourth in the Group I Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Ridden on the pace by Frankie Dettori, Campanelle was challenged late by Cable Bay colt Dragon Symbol who carried her to the outside when narrowly heading the filly.

The stewards later overturned the result giving Campanelle a second Group I victory to go with her win in the Prix Morny at Deauville last year.

“We are elated. Both horses ran fantastic, they dug down deep and there were only inches apart. I think it was a validated result - in the United States terms, he has taken her across the track,” said Wesley Ward.

“This was Campanelle’s first run since the Breeders' Cup. It was a gritty performance on heavy ground and, to come back from that, it is a true testament of how good this filly is.”

Bought from the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 for 190,000 guineas by Ben McElroy, Campanelle runs for Stonestreet Stables and has the great record of four wins from five starts.

Campanelle is the best of four winners from stakes-winner Janina, a daughter of Danehill Dancer’s Group III winner Lady Dominatrix.

She is one of five Group I winners for Invincible’s Spirit’s half-brother Kodiac, whose dual Group I winning son Hello Youmzain (Fr) will stand at Cambridge Stud in New Zealand this spring at a fee of $30,000.
