Two New Sires for Kooringal Stud

Media Release - Friday June 18

Impeccably bred stakes-winner Sandbar will add further quality to Kooringal Stud’s stallion roster in 2021.

The three-quarter brother to Golden Slipper winner Farnan has arrived at Kooringal in readiness to stand his first season.

Sandbar joins Frankel’s son Last Kingdom (USA)  as newcomers to the Wagga-based stud this year.

Sandbar will stand at a fee of $8,800.

The $650,000 price tag for Sandbar at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale was justified with dual stakes wins in Sydney as a two and three-year-old.

Sandbar followed a juvenile debut victory at Canterbury with success in the Listed Lonhro Stakes at Warwick Farm.

The bay went on to be beaten only four lengths in Estijaab’s Golden Slipper of 2018. Sandbar resumed with a victory in the Listed Rosebud at Rosehill before proving highly competitive in the top level three-year-old events.

Placings in the Group 2 Roman Consul at Randwick and a close second to Written By in the Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes were included in Sandbar’s career highlights.

Group 1 distinction narrowly eluded Sandbar when he was a length-and-a-half from the outstanding The Autumn Sun in finishing fourth in the Golden Rose at Rosehill.

Sandbar finished with four wins and more than $520,000 prizemoney to his credit.

His champion sire Snitzel is represented by exciting stud prospects Trapeze Artist, Russian Revolution and Invader as well as the proven Shamus Award, Wandjina and Sizzling.

Sandbar’s dam Tallow was a Group 3 winner and has also produced Farnan, whose crowning glory from five wins as a two year-old was the $3.5 million Golden Slipper in 2020.

Farnan’s sire Not A Single Doubt and Snitzel are both sons of Redoute’s Choice.

“We’ve been on the look out for a speed horse and one who is a spitting image of his champion sire Snitzel seemed to fit the bill nicely,” Kooringal Stud’s Angus Lamont said.

“He really complements our roster, giving breeders access to some of the world’s best sirelines, diverse types and differing credentials.

“Sandbar had fantastic form around some of the best horses of his generation.

“He’s a lovely athletic type and a three quarter-brother to the Golden Slipper winning, champion two-year-old Farnan - we are thrilled to have been able to secure him.”

Sandbar and Last Kingdom will accompany dual Group 1 winner Prized Icon and emerging sire The Brothers War at Kooringal this year.

Imported stallion Last Kingdom boasts top-shelf bloodlines for his introduction to the sire ranks.

Last Kingdom stands at a fee of $6,600.

The Group 3 winner’s sire Frankel is rated the best of his generation and his dam is the Kingmambo mare Compelling, who has three winners from as many to race including the stakes-placed Ivyetsu.

Last Kingdom emphasised his class by winning three of his first five appearances at Maisons-Lafitte in France, completing his hat-trick in the black type Prix Daphnis over 1800m.

Victories as an older horse in Hong Kong at Happy Valley and Sha Tin lifted Last Kingdom’s prizemoney close to $700,000.

“He was a very handy two and three-year-old in Europe and then was purchased for big money to race in Hong Kong,” Angus Lamont said.

“Frankel is a superstar and doing an incredible job in Australia, with 35 starters to date for 7 stakes winners at an amazing 20 per cent stakes winners/runners including multiple Group 1 winner Hungry Heart and winner of the Group 1 Metropolitan Mirage Dancer.”

Sandbar will stand at an introductory price of $8800 (inc GST) while Last Kingdom’s fee will be $6600 (inc GST).
