One To Watch - Swan Hill

Mark Smith - Friday June 11

Making his career debut, Kentucky Casanova kick-started the Swan Hill Carnival off on Friday with a dominant performance over 1200m.

Brian Park dominated the race from the front on the Michael Huglin-trained gelding.

The 3yo son of Artie Schiller (USA) turned back the challenge of the favourite Boom Spirit (Spirit Of Boom) by one and a quarter lengths with Donation (Outreach), the same distance back in third.

"He has shown a bit of ability but has taken forever to get where he has," Huglin told Racing.com.

"He has been very green with a few immaturity problems. He trialled up good behind Mr Quickie, and we fielded a few offers from Hong Kong. They weren't serious enough for us. We thought we could come here and win.

"He probably wants further, and he is still very green. Parky got in the right spot and was probably never going to get beat from the 600m onwards."

Kentucky Casanova is the second of three live foals left by the Not A Single Doubt mare Abdaan before her death in 2019.

A half-sister to the Group 1 ATC Sires' Produce Stakes runner-up Strike Me Lucky (Snitzel), Abdaan was a $160,000 purchase by Shadwell out of the Turangga Farm draft at the 2011 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

She won two and placed in three of her 16 starts before being consigned to the 2014 Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale, where Hancock Quality Bloodstock (FBAA) bought her for $20,000.

The final foal from Abdaan is a 2yo Sir Prancelot (IRE) colt purchased by Lisa Latta for $60,000 out of the Cannon Hayes Stud draft at the 2020 Adelaide Yearling Sale, having been bought a year earlier at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale by Pinhook Bloodstock (FBAA) for $22,500.

Artie Schiller (USA) has ridden the tide of fashion, but the sire of Flying Artie can get a serious horse and looks attractively priced at a fee of $11,000 at Stockwell Stud in 2021.
