Foxwedge's Daughter Charleise Flies in the Spear Chief

Mark Smith - Saturday June 5

Racing in career best form, the four-year-old Foxwedge mare  Charleise sprouted wins over the final 100m to earn a first stakes success in Saturday’s Listed Nuturf Spear Chief Hcp (1500m) at Eagle Farm.

Fastnet Rock’s $2.3million son Groundswell looked to have the race shot to bits at the 100m but could not hold the finish of Jye McNeil on the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained mare.

Charleise defeated Groundswell by a long-head with Luvoir (Deep Field) a half-head back in third.

It was just the fifth start at stakes level for Charleise whose only previous placing came when third behind Microphone when making her career debut in the Listed Talindert Stakes at Flemington in February 2019.

Never further back than second in her last four starts, Charleise came to the Spear Chief off a two and a half length win at Rosehill on May 22.

A homebred for Chris Barham and partners, Charleise advances her record to five wins, four seconds and three thirds from 18 starts with earnings of $292,990.

Charleise is the only foal to race out of the Lonhro mare Adio who won her only two starts.

Segenhoe Stud consigned Adio to the 2017 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale where she was purchase by Aquis / Blue Sky Bloodstock (FBAA) for $36,000 when carrying a Headwater filly who would sell for $20,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale.

Aido

BRT Bloodstock purchased Adio for $14,000 when she was back in the sale ring at the 2020 MM National Broodmare Sale when carrying a filly by Divine Prophet.

From the Swettenham Stud family descending from Pre Of Heart’s dam Audrey Joan (GB), Adio was covered by Spirit Of Boom last spring.

Charleise becomes the 22nd stakes-winner for Woodside Park’s Foxwedge who stands the 2021 season at a fee of $11,000.
