If you’ve just bought a mare at the recent sales, you’ll now be pondering which stallion could be her perfect match, so we’re going to look hard at the options in various price points in coming weeks offering facts and statistics that might bring clarity for the undecided.

The next price point offers an eclectic mix of sires including first season horses, third season horses, a much loved champion in Lonhro, proven horses in their prime like Dundeel, So You Think and Deep Field and a young gun in Capitalist that many are tipping is headed straight to the top.

We’re comparing apples and oranges here so it’s hard to come up with a table of pertinent facts that are relevant to all horses so we’ll do them separately as first season sires, third season sires and proven sires.

First Season

Wootton Bassett (GB) and Bivouac have two very different profiles, but as the two most expensive first season sires available to breeders this spring, they will be competing for the same sector of the market.

Both stallions will have major support from their respective farms Coolmore and Darley, but outside breeders will need to come on board to provide the volume of mares required for commercial success.

Bivouac

By champion sire Exceed and Excel, Bivouac is a multiple Group I winning sprinter that fits the accepted profile for sire success and Wootton Bassett is already a proven commodity in Europe as the sire of 18 stakes-winners, four of them Group I winners.

Wootton Bassett

His rise from humble beginnings through to being acquired by Coolmore to stand on their roster in Ireland this year for 100,000 euros has been well documented and the overwhelming sale ring success of the first Southern Hemisphere bred progeny of his champion son Almanzor (Fr) this year will have most breeders intrigued.

Completely free of Danehill blood, Wootton Bassett will be one of the most anticipated shuttle arrivals this year.

Third Season

Champion colts by champion sires, The Autumn Sun and Trapeze Artist tick all the boxes.
