The Razor Blade Legacy Lives On

Mark Smith - Saturday September 16

It must have been heartbreaking for the Moodie family with the loss of their much-loved mare Razor Blade but the homebred daughter of Blazing Sword is still the gift that keeps on giving with her granddaughter Sword Of Light claiming Saturday's Group II Let's Elope Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.

It's been a long time between drinks for Contract Racing's 4yo New Approach mare whose previous stakes win came at her second race start in the Group III Blue Diamond Preview in January 2016.

"It was well-deserved, she has been all around the place," Ellerton said.

"She was a stakes winner early in her life. She had to do a bit of work to do today but she had a good rest once she got there and it was good.

"She had a tough run first up, that was in the back of mind, how she faced that strong wind at Caulfield, but she is a pretty tough sought of mare.

"We'll see how the spring unfolds for her. She is a Group II winner over 1400 metres today and we will progress through the mares series and see how far she takes us.

With her second stakes win, Sword Of Light advances her record to 5 wins, 2 seconds and 2 thirds from 19 starts with earnings of $608,250.

She is the second foal of the stakes-placed King's Best mare Joyeuse who is a half-sister to Group I Oakleigh Plate winner Flamberge (Exceed And Excel); Group II winner Sunburnt Land (Scenic), who was killed by lightning while spelling after placing in the Group 1 Patinack Classic and Salinger Stakes; the Listed stakes-winner and Group I placed mare Curtana (Exceed And Excel) and the Group III Standish Handicap winner Durendal (Medaglia d'Oro).

Joyeuse has a 2yo colt by Exceed And Excel and a yearling filly by Written Tycoon.

She was bred back to Redoute's Choice last season.
