Vale, Jim Bartholomew of Barador Stud

Media Release - Thursday June 3

Thoroughbreds Breeders’ NSW is saddened to learn of the death of Barador Stud’s founder Jim Bartholomew at the age of 87, a Life Member of the Association and former President.

Jim was born in Adelaide and developed his love of the racing and breeding industry while living in South Africa for business.

Vale, Jim Bartholomew

He stood several stallions at his stud in South Africa including Pentland Fith (Crepello) and Quo Banco (Quorum) and bred the high-class Te Aroha, a five-time winner of the Lonsdale Stirrup Cup in Durban, a son of Battle Wagon from a Le Filou mare Jim imported from New Zealand.

In 1974 Jim founded Barador Stud at the historic Martindale homestead in the Hunter Valley and moved back to Australia in 1979. Star racehorses bred at Barador include two-time Stradbroke Handicap winner and sire Daybreak Lover, Epsom Handicap winner Navy Seal, five-time stakes-winner So Gorgeous, Melbourne Cup and Brisbane Cup placegetter Rising Fear and other stakes-winners including Wild Queen, Hairy, Cumbria and more.

Jim served on the TBNSW committee for twelve years including four years as President and two years as vice-president. He also served as a Director with Aushorse from 1995 to 1997, Vice-President of Thoroughbred Breeders’ Australia from 1996 to 1998 and as President of the Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association from 1988 to 1992.

Thoroughbred Breeders’ NSW sends its deepest condolences to Jim’s wife Barbara and four children David, Richard, Kate and Andrew and five grandchildren will forever be indebted to this wonderful servant to the thoroughbred breeding industry both in NSW and throughout Australia.
