One to Watch – Goulburn

Tara Madgwick - Friday May 28

A million dollar yearling from a million dollar mare caught the eye at Goulburn on Friday when breaking the ice.

Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, three year-old Medaglia D’Oro (USA) gelding California Sky was fit and ready to fire at his third run back from a spell.

He raced on the pace and when challenged by short priced favourite Armour Force, he surged away to win the 1500m maiden by a length and a half.

Placed twice previously, California Sky will take some confidence from the win and could easily progress further.

$1million Magic Millions purchase, California Sky as a yearling.

A $1million Magic Millions purchase for Asian Bloodstock Services from the Widden Stud draft, California Sky was bred by Widden stud and partners and is the second foal and first winner for Group I ATC Sires Produce Stakes winner Peggy Jean.

Peggy Jean was bought by Widden for $1million at the 2016 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale when in foal to I Am Invincible and her first foal from that mating, a filly, was sold at the 2018 Magic Millions for $750,000.

Peggy Jean sold for $1million back at MM National in 2016.

Sadly for Widden Stud and their partners, Peggy Jean only had the two foals before her premature death in 2017.

Widden Stud have been active purchasers at the Magic Millions Broodmare Sale this week, their acquisitions including another $1million mare in quality Group III winning sprinter Humma Humma offered straight off the track and Group II winner Tsaritsa offered in foal to I Am Invincible for $950,000.
