First Group I Winner for Oaklands Stud's Power

Tara Madgwick - Sunday May 23

Now based at Oaklands Stud in Queensland, Oasis Dream son Power (GB) produced his first Group I winner overnight in Ireland when Helvic Dream won the Group I Curragh Tattersalls Gold Cup (1m 2 and 1/2f) .

Trained by Noel Meade, four year-old gelding Helvic Dream had chased home race favourite Broome in each of his three runs this year, but on heavy ground was able to turn the tables scoring a determined short head win over the Ballydoyle runner.

“Colin (Keane) said he was going to sit a bit closer and have one go at Broome,” said Noel Meade.

“He felt he went too soon for Helvic Dream the last day and he felt he did again today. He has an electrifying turn of speed but lasted it out. It was a brilliant ride.

“He's been a pleasure to train and doesn't take a lot of work. There have been plenty of people interesting in buying him but thankfully the owners have kept faith in me as I felt he could win a Group 1.”

Purchased for just 12,000 euros from the Tattersalls Ireland Yearling Sale, Helvic Dream is from unraced Danehill Dancer mare Rachevie from the family of Champion 3YO Filly Diminuendo.

Helvic Dream has the overall record of four wins and seven placings from 15 starts and is the best of 20 stakes-winners sired by Power, who stands at Oaklands  Stud at a fee of $13,200.
Power stands in Queensland at Oaklands Stud.
