First Season Sires at MM National Weanling Sale

Tara Madgwick - Sunday May 23

The dust has now settled on a super charged Magic Millions National Weanling Sale last week, so we thought a closer look at how the first season sires fared would prove interesting.

A record-breaking sale made for strong returns across the board and for investors interested in gauging reaction to the progeny of first season sires there was enough on offer to whet the appetite for more to come when we see a new round of yearling sales in 2022.

The Autumn Sun stands at Arrowfield Stud this spring at a fee of $66,000- click to see his page.
Arrowfield Stud’s Champion 3YO The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice)  finished as the leader by average with five youngsters averaging $212,000 and his top seller (and the highest priced weanling by a first season sire ) was a filly from Kennocha that made $360,000 for Kenmore Lodge when bought by Redwall Syndicate Ltd/James Harron Bloodstock.

$360,000 The Autumn Sun filly from Kennocha.

She is the third foal of a winning half-sister by Lonhro to Group II winner Celts, the dam of Group I winners La Tene and Gaulois.

Coolmore’s undefeated Triple Crown winner Justify (USA) was next with four weanlings selling at an average $182,500 with his top seller a colt from Mongolian Beauty that fetched $300,000 for Coolmore when bought by Group I Bloodstock.

Widden Stud’s Champion 3YO Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) was just behind the top two having had five weanlings average $135,600 with his top seller a colt from Viviette (IRE) that made $330,000 for Three Bridges Thoroughbreds when bought by Bahen Bloodstock/ Bromfield Park Pty Ltd.

The Autumn Sun, Trapeze Artist and Justify were the three most expensive first season sires of their year by quite a margin so to see them at the top of this list is no surprise and likely to be repeated at the major yearling sales next year.

Coolmore’s dual Group I winner Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact) had only two weanlings offered and both sold for $125,000 and $100,000, an eye catching result given his service fee for this spring is $13,750.

Brave Smash (Jpn) (Tosen Phantom - Aquis), Grunt (O’Reilly - Yulong) and Lean Mean Machine (Zoustar - Aquis) all had weanlings that sold for $100,000 or more and are also priced affordably this spring at $16,500, $13,750 and $13,200 respectively.
