First Runner a Winner

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday May 19

For breeders and pedigree analysts there was a very interesting winner in the UK overnight that is the first anywhere in the world to combine the blood of two of the best young stallions in Europe in Kingman and Frankel, who both stand at Juddmonte.

Two year-old Kingman colt Tolstoy was sent out for his debut in a six furlong maiden at Yarmouth and ran home a stylish half length winner for co-trainers John and Thady Gosden.

The past two winners of this race have gone on to compete at Royal Ascot, so Tolstoy may follow suit.

A homebred for Sir Robert Ogden, Tolstoy is the first winner for unraced War and Peace, a Frankel daughter of Group I winning Dansili mare Emulous.

Tolstoy is the first runner bred on this cross and is the first winner for Frankel as a broodmare sire, although he is the sire of a stakes horse with his imported daughter Dream in Colour (GB) the dam of this season’s Australian stakes-placed two year-old Wizard of Oz (Exceed and Excel).

Frankel has one weanling to be offered at Magic Millions this week as Lot 387 from Coolmore Stud. The filly is the first foal of stakes-placed Iiex Excelsa, a half-sister to Group winners Gibraltar Blue and Scream Blue Murder.
