'Freakish' Royal Symphony remains unbeaten

Darryl Sherer - Saturday September 16

Roget's Thesaurus was given a thorough thumbing to accurately describe Royal Symphony's win in Saturday's Listed Pin And Win Plate (1400m) at Flemington.

After looking in an impossible position along the inside and at the rear rounding the home turn, Dwayne Dunn found a way through on Royal Symphony who was still two lengths off Eclair Sunshine with 75m to go.

Royal Symphony ($2 fav) flashed home to defeat a stunned Regan Bayliss aboard Eclair Sunshine ($31 - $61) by a head, with Sebfire ($18) also making up several lengths in the home straight to finish third, beaten 1 1/2-lengths.

Dunn said he had accepted his fate rounding the home turn.

"I thought I was gone turning in but I was lucky to get on the back of Philip Stokes's horse and he took me through the race and into the clear," Dunn said.

"I was in a terrible spot after getting smashed early and to his credit he put up with that.

"After that I had to ride for luck and just hope he would accelerate like he did - good horses can get themselves out of trouble.

"He steps OK but doesn't muster speed to take a spot but when you've got a turn of foot like he has you can get away with it to an extent. His race smarts are getting better each time."

McEvoy said he was at a loss for words to describe the winning effort of the unbeaten son of Domesday.

"That was freakish really," McEvoy said. "For him to win like that was very special - I went from saying he can't win then Dwayne was able to pick his way through the field.

"I've got half a dozen at home that work better than this horse but he's a game day horse and turns up on race day."

McEvoy said he will monitor Royal Symphony before making a decision on his next start.

"I'll see how he comes through this but I'd say either to Guineas Prelude or the Stutt Stakes will be next for him," McEvoy said.

"He was fresh coming into this - I didn't want him peaking here, the Caulfield Guineas is his grand final and that's when we want to see him at his best."
