How to Buy a Blue Hen?

Pedigree, performance and superior type often make for a premium mare capable of becoming that most sought after of bloodstock commodities - a Group I producer.

The Newgate Consignment of mares to be offered at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale on Friday evening at Riverside Stables is right up to the standard we have come to expect from Henry Field’s elite Hunter Valley bloodstock operation.

Past Newgate Consignment drafts have included Group I winner Response (sold for $1.5million in 2015), who went on to produce Golden Slipper winner Estijaab, Maastricht (sold for $2.25 million in 2019), whose star daughter Loving Gaby went on to win two Group I races after her sale and Bonnie Mac (sold for $375,000 in 2019), who subsequently produced Group I winner Exceedance and Group III winner Oxley Road.

“We’ve built a great reputation for bringing these types of elite mares to the marketplace and our record proves we are here to sell,” said Henry Field.

"The proof is in the pudding and so many of these high profile mares have produced Group I winners and stunning yearlings for their new owners."

The Newgate Consignment for the Inglis Chairman’s Sale features 8 mares that are all stakes performers or stakes producers with Lot 27, dual Group I winner and $3.7 million earner In Her Time the standout.

In Her Time was bought at this sale last year for $2million, but returns to the sale ring this time with a positive early cover to champion sire I Am Invincible, whose yearlings averaged over $625,000 at the 2021 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

“She was the best female sprinter in the world in 2018 and we offer her on behalf of Orbis Bloodstock,” said Henry Field.

“Orbis have an investment in their two young stallions going to stud this spring in North Pacific and Doubtland that they will be supporting with a number of mares. A mare of In Her Time's value doesn’t necessarily fit with this strategy and as such they have decided to put her on the market.”

“She is probably the best in foal mare that will be offered at public auction anywhere in the world this year and we feel privileged to be entrusted with her sale, but it will be a bittersweet moment when she is sold.”

In Her Time is not the only dual Group I winner in the draft with quality staying mare Danzdanzdance to be offered as Lot 18.

The Champion NZ Middle Distance Horse in 2018/2019, Danzdanzdance also comes with a big pedigree featuring Champion 3YO Filly Lucia Valentina and numerous other Black Type winners.

“She’s by Mastercraftsman, the sire of Maastricht, who we sold here a few years ago for $2.25 million,” Field pointed out.

“Maastricht had a promising I Am Invincible 2YO at the time of the sale in Loving Gaby, who went on to win two Group I races and her subsequent foals are every bit as nice.

"Danzdanzdance is a champion and can easily follow in her footsteps."

Lot 58 Sweet Deal is being offered as a racing and breeding proposition and as a multiple Group winner of $1.4million and last start winner of the Group III Hawkesbury Crown last Saturday there is clearly scope for her to still win that elusive Group I race.

“I’ve had her trainer John Thompson on the phone to me most days about the chances of racing her on,” said Field.

“She’s perfectly sound, fit and well and in top form with the Group I Tatts Tiara looming large before the end of the season. She represents an incredible opportunity buy an amazing broodmare prospect that could still win a Group I.”

Lot 36 is blue-blooded Snitzel stakes-winner Meuse, who is offered in foal to Dundeel in her first season at stud.

“Meuse is a mare we know well as we bred and sold her as a yearling for $500,000, so we take great pleasure in offering her for sale for her current owners,” said Field.

“She comes from one of the best families in the Australian Studbook and really is the complete package with undeniable international appeal.”

Lot 46 is Pinmedown (NZ), a quality winner of the Group II Eight Carat Classic and Group III Sunline Vase in New Zealand being offered off the track and ready to go to stud.

“She’s an attractive mare by champion sire Pins and has a lovely outcross pedigree packed with Black Type that is going to make her a very easy mare to mate to any of the leading Australian sires,” said Field.

Lot 60 is Twitchy Frank, another young Group III winning mare in foal to Deep Field in her first season at stud.

“She’s by a top class sire in Choisir and is in foal to one of the best young stallions in the country. It’s a mating I think is physically outstanding, so she’s a young mare that will tick a lot of boxes for any commercial investor,” Field concluded.

Deep Field has had three winners from three runners bred from daughters of Choisir and they include his brilliant stakes-winning filly Isotope, who has gone to the paddock in preparation for the coming spring carnivals.

The Newgate Consignment mares will be parading at Riverside Stables from 8.30am on Wednesday morning and interested parties are encouraged to inspect these glorious mares destined to be star producers of the future.
