Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Monday May 3

A big set of trials at Randwick on Monday morning included six heats won by two year-olds that include the colt that topped the 2020 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Deep Impact colt Profondo was a standout this morning having his second public trial after a quiet fourth at Hawkesbury last month.

Ridden by Robbie Dolan, the Richard Litt trained colt settled back in the field on the fence and when angled into clear ground in the straight hit the line hard.

He was doing his best work in the last 100m to win his 1050m heat by more than a length running away.

Bred by Arrowfield Stud, Profondo was consigned in their draft to Magic Millions where he was bought by Castlevecchio’s owner Ottavio Galletta under his Galletta Constructions Co Ltd for $1.9million to top the sale.

Given to Richard Litt, who also put the polish on Group I winner Castelvecchio, Profondo has been handled patiently and looks to have plenty of talent recording the quickest time of 1:01.90 for all heats run at that trip.

Profondo is the first foal for Group III winning Redoute’s Choice mare Honesty Prevails, whose second foal, a colt by Shalaa (IRE) sold for $1,150,000 at Magic Millions this year when bought by James Harron Bloodstock.

Profondo topped the 2020 Magic Millions when selling for $1.9million.

Honesty Prevails has a weanling colt by Dundeel, but missed last spring to Written Tycoon so will have no foal this year.

The late champion Japanese sire Deep Impact has certainly made an impact in Australia with a small number of his progeny racing here over the years, most of them Japanese bred that have come to race here as older tried horses.

He has had 30 runners for 16 winners that include Group I winning stallions Fierce Impact (Jpn), Tosen Stardom (Jpn) and Real Impact (Jpn) as well as an additional six stakes-placed horses that include the Australian foaled Group I placed Bucharest, who is from champion Redoute’s Choice mare Miss Finland.

Other 2YO heat winners were: In the Congo (Snitzel), Volcanic Rock (Hinchinbrook), Anchorage (Capitalist), Icing on the Cake (Astern) and Tiger of Malay (Extreme Choice).
