Stakes Success for Toronado in the United States and Great Britain

Mark Smith - Sunday May 2

Swettenham Stud shuttler Toronado (IRE) has enjoyed outstanding success south of the equator, however the son of High Chaparral (IRE) cast a net far and wide on the weekend.

It began with Mick Channon-trained filly Ilykato who earned her first victory since capturing a maiden at Windsor in August last year in the Listed Guaranteed Conqueror Fillies Stakes (1m) at Goodwood.

Ilykato’s hopes looked forlorn 2-furlongs out before Edward Greatrex threaded the needle to reach the post a nose ahead of the Declaration Of War (USA) mare Agincourt.

There is an Australasian connection here as Ilykato was purchased by Kilbride Equine / Paul Moroney Bloodstock for 68,000gns out of the Taroka Stud draft at the 2019 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

A half-sister to the Group II Flying Childers Stakes winner Beacon (Paco Boy), Ilykato is out of the winning Acclamation mare Key Light a daughter of the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes winner Eva Luna (Double Schwartz).

There were richer pickings for Toronado (IRE) on the other side of the Atlantic when the 5yo gelding Tribhuvan (FR) went wire to wire in the Grade II Fort Marcy Stakes on the turf at Belmont.

It was the second win in four starts for Tribhuvan (FR) since he transferred to the stable of Chad Brown after beginning his career in Europe where he took 12 starts to break his maiden.

The win in the Fort Marcy was the first start for Tribhuvan (FR) in tenth months. Twelve months ago in the same race he was pulled up after a buckle on his reins broke.

A 30,000euros purchase at the 2016 Arqana Breeding Stock Sale, Tribhuvan (FR) becomes the 14th stakes-winner for Toronado (IRE) who will stand at Swettenham Stud in 2021 at a fee of $49,500.
