One to Watch – Albury

Tara Madgwick - Monday April 26

Newgate Farm’s promising young sire Winning Rupert added a fifth winner to his tally at Albury on Monday and she was so impressive she’s our ‘One to Watch’ on Monday.

Trained by Nick Olive, Nephradiva led all the way as a hot favourite and gave her older rivals no chance of catching her as she opened up to win the 900m maiden by more than four lengths.

A $40,000 Inglis Classic purchase for her trainer from the Torryburn Stud draft, Nephradiva is a half-sister to stakes-placed Runforit and is the fourth winner from Nephtys, a winning Redoute’s Choice mare from the family of Group I winners Star Shiraz and Savatiano.

Nephradiva as a yearling

Nephtys died last year and her final foal is a yearling filly also by Winning Rupert that was sold by Torryburn Stud at Inglis Classic this year for $75,000.

Another brilliant son of Written Tycoon, Winning Rupert has sired five winners as well as stakes-placed Bolsonaro.

2YO racing might garner a lot of attention, but the reality is G1 races run for this age group are shining a light on a comparatively small slice of that foal crop, whereas 3YO racing is where the real action lies as the good horses from the season before have to step up or slide out of contention.

G1 Older Sprinters- Are Our Sprinters the Best in the World?
The Australian G1 season has concluded and there were 23 Group I races won by older horses at a distance less than 1600m, but one race that fits the category but is yet to be given G1 status is the $10million Golden Eagle (1500m) and form out of it would suggest it was the best of them all.
