One to Watch – Werribee

Tara Madgwick - Friday April 23

Champion sire I Am Invincible posted his 12th Australian two year-old winner of the season on Friday and he did it with a blue-blooded colt carrying the famous Makybe Diva colours.

Trained by Peter Moody and ridden by Luke Nolen, Smytzer made light work of the 1100m juvenile maiden, cruising clear to win by a length and a quarter.

Smytzer was retained to race by Makybe.

A homebred for Tony Santic’s Makybe Racing and Breeding, he was retained to race after passing in shy of his $800,000 reserve at Inglis Easter last year.

“Tony has been a great supporter of the stable for many years and was one of the first people to ring me when we kicked back off training and said I’ve got a nice little colt for you,” said Peter Moody, who holds Smytzer in high regard.

“There’s not a lot of stakes options in Melbourne at this time of year so we may look at Adelaide or Brisbane, but he might head to the paddock and look towards spring. We’ll let the horse tell us.”

Smytzer is a half-brother to Group I MRC Thousand Guineas winner Amicus and stakes-winner Cheer Leader being the eighth winner from nine foals to race from stakes-placed Gold Chant, a half-sister to world champion sprinter and sire Starspangledbanner.

Smytzer is the last foal of Gold Chant, who died in 2019.
