Debut Winner with a Derby Pedigree

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday April 20

It’s getting late in the season so the opportunity for this three year-old to win a Derby is fast disappearing, but his pedigree suggests a classic stayer in the making so we need to take a closer look.

The Chris Waller trained Tavistock gelding Logan Street Lion made an eye-catching debut at Geelong on Tuesday when he powered clear to beat the favourite by two lengths.

Ridden by Damian Lane, he travelled smoothly just behind the leaders and was dominant to the line.

A $120,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase for Go Racing from the Te Runga Stud draft, Logan Street Lion is the sixth winner from Group III placed Stravinsky (USA) mare Napa Sky, a full sister to Group II winner La Sizeranne from the family of Tavistock’s Group I ATC Australian Derby winner Tavago.

A Cambridge Stud blue-blood from the family of Grosvenor and champions such as Lonhro and Lankan Rupee, Napa Sky started her stud career in Australia before being purchased by Paul Willetts Bloodstock in 2016 at the Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale for $50,000.

Sent immediately to New Zealand, Napa Sky produced Logan Street Lion from her first mating to a Kiwi based sire and has since produced a colt by Zacinto (GB) and a filly by Shocking.
