The 2021 South Island Sale hosted on Gavelhouse Plus affords buyers the opportunity to secure progeny by an array of freshman sires based around the country, many of which proved popular at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 95th National Yearling Sales Series in January.
Bidding is now open on Gavelhouse Plus and is set to close Wednesday 14 April at 7PM (NZT).
Almanzor
Standing at Cambridge Stud, freshman sire Almanzor (FR) (Wootton Basset) made an immense impact at Karaka 2021, with his first crop in hot demand by a strong domestic and international buying bench.
He was the leading first season sire by average, with 43 lots purchased for an average of $192,500 and amassing $8,200,000 in turnover. This also placed him third on the overall leading sires by average table, with his top progeny purchased for a hefty $560,000 – Lot 578 a colt out of Notice Received (NZ) (O’Reilly) secured by Bruce Perry Bloodstock in conjunction with Chris Waller Racing and Yes Bloodstock.
Almanzor is by Wootton Basset and was Europe’s Champion Three-Year-Old colt in 2016, claiming the same honour in Ireland and France. He won eight of his 11 starts, six of them at stakes level including three Group One titles.

Derryn
The Central Districts has welcomed a newcomer to the breeding scene in Derryn (AUS) (Hinchinbrook), joining the roster at Grangewilliam Stud in Wanganui.
At Karaka 2021, 10 yearlings by Derryn sold for an average of $35,200, off a $5,000 service fee in 2019.
Derryn is by Hinchinbrook, the sire of 21 stakes winners including Champion Sprinter in Hong Kong Beat The Clock and Caulfield Guineas winner Press Statement.
Out of Lonhro mare Munhro, Derryn won the Group Two Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) as a three-year-old, beating Group One winners Global Glamour (Star Witness) and Impending (Lonhro). He was also Group One placed over 1200m in the Doomben Ten Thousand Stakes.
There are four colts by Derryn offered in the South Island Sale on Gavelhouse Plus.
Mongolian Falcon
Standing at Willow Glen Stud in Canterbury in conjunction with the Inner Mongolian Rider Horse Industry for $3,000, first season sire Mongolian Falcon (AUS) (Fastnet Rock) had a successful race career in New Zealand securing three wins and four placings from nine starts.
As a two-year-old he was runner up in the Listed Matamata Slipper Stakes (1200m). He then went on to win the Group Two Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m) at three, beating Australian Derby winner Jon Snow (NZ) (Iffraaj) by five lengths and also placed second in the Group Two James & Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes (1400m) at Te Rapa.
He is a son of leading stallion Fastnet Rock, a renowned source of Group One winners in both hemispheres siring the likes of top flight performers Avantage, Atlantic Jewel and Mosheen.
This year’s South Island Sale catalogue features seven yearlings by Mongolian Falcon.
Satono Aladdin
Previously standing at Rich Hill Stud in Matamata, Satono Aladdin (JPN) has been unable to return to the nursery since 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
His yearlings were popular amongst buyers at Karaka 2021, with 19 fillies and colts selling for an average of $70,658 and a turnover of $1,342,500, off a 2019 service fee of $12,500. His top priced progeny included a $360,000 purchased made by Paul Moroney Bloodstock and Ballymore Stables - Lot 451, a colt out of Inthespotlight (NZ) (O’Reilly).
Satono Aladdin regularly thrilled Japan’s racing fans and was a stakes performer at two, three, four, five and six years old. His top performances include the Group One Tokyo Yasuda Kinen (1600m) which he won at six, as well as victories in the Group Two Mainichi Broadcasting System Sho Swan (1400m) and Group Two Keio Hai Spring Cup (1400m).
There is one yearling by Satono Aladdin offered in the catalogue.
Time Test
Central-based freshman sire Time Test (GB) currently shuttles to New Zealand’s oldest thoroughbred nursey Little Avondale Stud.
Karaka 2021 also proved a happy hunting ground for Time Test’s progeny after 17 yearlings were purchased for an average of $65,000 amassing an aggregate of $1,119,000, of a 2019 service fee of $10,000.
The son of Dubawi won six of his 14 starts, including four victories at Group level. He broke the track record with his victory in the Group Three Tercentenary Stakes (2000m) at Royal Ascot, and he also won the Group Two Joel Stakes (1600m), Group Two York Stakes (2100m) and Group Three Brigadier Gerard Stakes (2000m).

War Decree
Standing at Inglewood Stud in Canterbury, War Decree (USA) (War Front) is an exciting sire to come up through the South Island stallion ranks.
War Decree’s progeny were well received at Karaka 2021, after 11 yearlings sold for an average of $53,273, off a 2019 service fee of $6,500.
From 11 starts, War Decree won three times including the Group Two Vintage Stakes (1400m) at Goodwood, beating the Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow. He also won the Group Three Dundalk Diamond Stakes (2300m) and placed in another two Group Two events.
There are four yearlings by War Decree offered at this year’s sale.
Another benefit of the 2021 South Island Sale is that all unbroken yearlings offered through the catalogue on Gavelhouse Plus are eligible for NZB’s lucrative Karaka Million Series, featuring two $1 million races and the $100,000 Karaka Cup.
