Savabeel Colt Opens His Account at Sale

Mark Smith - Wednesday April 7

Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young have enjoyed enormous success with the progeny of Waikato Stud’s Savabeel, and they have another likely type in the two-year-old colt Tametomo.

Having failed to strike a blow at his career debut at Bendigo last December, there was little money to suggest that the son of Savabeel would make his presence felt when he resumed in a 1205m maiden at Sale on Wednesday.

Given a ground-saving ride by Daniel Moor, Tametomo only left the fence when going outside the leader Prince Among Men in the straight.

Carrying the colours of First Light Racing, Tametomo hit the line strongly to defeat the American Pharoah (USA) filly, Grappa Di Moscato, by three-quarters of a length with Winning Rupert colt Prince Amongst Men a long-neck back in third.

“He still has a lot to learn. He lost it at his first start, and he nearly did again today - he got quite warm,” Moor said.”

“He is a just a real little lad. He is handing his work well and taking it all in his stride. He has had a day out today, so hopefully, that will bring him on.”

The runner-up Grappa Di Moscato is out of the stakes-winning, Golden Slipper-placed Fastnet Rock mare Lake Geneva, whose half-sister by I Am Invincible made $1,950,000 to the bid of Sheamus Mills Bloodstock a short time later at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Tametomo made a more modest $240,000 to the bid of Busuttin Racing / First Light Racing / Mr P Willetts from the Waikato Stud draft at the 2020 NZB Yearling Sale at Karaka.

He is the second foal of the winning Shirocco mare Tomoe a half-sister to Group III runner-up Saint Loup (Zamindar), out of Sanada (Priolo), a half-sister to the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary, Group 1 Prix de Diane and Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner Sarafina (Refuse To Bend).
