Red Letter Day for Headwater at Morphettville

Mark Smith - Sunday March 28

It was a productive day for Vinery Stud's Headwater at Morphettville on Saturday with his two-year-old son Karacasu opening his account over 1100m before the three-year-old filly Mileva putting the icing on the cake when conquering her elders in the Listed Manihi Classic.

The Richard and Chantelle Jolly-trained Karacasu just missed when second on debut at Morphettville Parks on March 13. He made no mistake at his second.

With Jake Toeroek in the saddle, Karacasu came from the tail of the field to overpower Brother's Shadow (Niagra) by a long-neck with  Tavikat (Tavistock) a short-half-head back in third.

A $50,000 pinhook by Rhys Smith out of the Cornerstone Stud draft at the 2019 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale, Karacasu was consigned by Vinery Stud to the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where he was hammered down to his trainers for $160,000.

A winner at Moonee Valley and Sandown, Miss Cooper is out of the Dehere (USA) mare Miss Lenglen, a half-sister to Group III winner Oakleigh Girl out of the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate winner Miss Kournikova (Mr Greeley).

The Dan Clarken/Oopy MacGillivray-trained Mileva downed a top-notch field in the Listed Manihi Classic (1100m).

Given a positive ride by Anna Jorsdjo, Mileva defeated the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes heroine Lyre (Lonhro) by three-quarter of a length with Brimarvi Vehero (Von Costa De Hero) the same distance back in third.

It was a milestone first black-type success for her young jockey.

“I love her so much, she’s definitely my favourite horse,” Jorsdjo told Racing.com.

“To get my first black-type win for Dan and Oopy, who have been such amazing supporters and made my transition into a senior (jockey) easy, is huge. I can’t thank them enough for the opportunities they’ve given me.

“It’s probably the best day I’ve had on a racecourse.

“I thought this time last year we were going to have a lot of fun through the carnival, but she was a bit shin-sore through her two-year-old preparation and she just needed that time to mature.”

A $42,000 purchase by Oopy MacGillivray out of the Little Hills Pastoral draft at the 2019 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, Mileva advances her record to four wins, a second and a third from seven starts with earnings of $157,035.

Mileva is the first foal of the Magic Albert mare Lady Einstein who Little Hills had purchased off Vinery for $30,000 at the 2017 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale when carrying the future Manihi Stakes winner.

A winner at Geelong and Cranbourne in a light career of five starts, Lady Einstein, is a half-sister to the Group II  MRC PB Lawrence Stakes winner Second Effort (Mossman) and the Group III MRC Heath Stakes winner Diamond Effort (Mossman).

Lady Einstein has a 2yo colt by Nicconi that Wilde Racing purchased for $130,000 at the 2020 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

After foaling a Showtime colt last spring, Lady Einstein was again covered by Headwater.
