Winning Debut for Star Pierro Colt

Tara Madgwick - Thursday March 25

Metropolitan racing returned to Sydney on Thursday after the big wet and the first race at Randwick on the Kensington track was won in tenacious style by Pierro two year-old Kalino carrying the Star Thoroughbreds colours.

Tuned up with two good recent trials and partnered by Tommy Berry, Kalino handled the heavy ground and was very strong to the line to score a short head win as favourite.

“I was happy with the way he switched off today as he wanted to do a bit too much in his trial, but we put a cross over noseband on him and he respects that,” said Berry.

“He was very strong late and has a bright future.”

A $210,000 Inglis Classic purchase from the Tyreel Stud draft for Star Thoroughbreds / Randwick Bloodstock Agency (FBAA), Kalino was bred by Bill and Chris Lovatt and is the second winner from two foals to race from I Am Invincible mare Lanikai.

Kalino was sold at Inglis Classic by Tyreel Stud for $210,000.

A half-sister to stakes-placed Peace Not War, Lanikai comes from the family of Group I winners River Dove and Crown Prosecutor as well as Group II winner and promising young sire Headwater.

Tyreel Stud sold the yearling filly by Rubick from Lanikai at Inglis Classic this year to Prime Thoroughbreds for $170,000 and she is now in foal to Yes Yes Yes.
