One To Watch - Wyong

Mark Smith - Thursday February 25

There would be precious few tougher winning debuts than that made by the striking Street Boss (USA) filly Siege over 1100m at Wyong on Thursday.

With Christian Reith in the saddle, Siege was hung out to dry, four and five wide from her outside barrier.

The James Cummings-trained debutant was entitled to give it up in the straight. However, she kept up a relentless gallop to defeat the Dream Ahead (USA) filly Russbuss by a half-length, with the Zoustar filly Zain's Girl a length back in third.

Godolphin stable representative Darren Beadman said the strapping three-year-old chestnut filly has a lot more to offer.

"She is a stunning filly, really well-bred," Beadman said.

"She is by Street Boss (USA) and has the Merchant Navy bloodlines.

"She has a few little issues early days, but the stable looked after her and gave her plenty of time to strengthen up and build her confidence.

"We told Christian not to throw her to the wolves too early, and she will finish the race off for you.

"She's a lovely big strong filly with a lot of upside."

Siege is the third winner from as many foals out of the Group III VRC Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes winner Montsegur.

A daughter of New Approach (IRE), Montsegur is a half-sister to the Group III ATC Canonbury Stakes winner Tessera (Medaglia d'Oro) out of the Flying Spur mare Chatoyant.

A 4-time winner in Sydney, Chatoyant is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Bonaria, Group III winner Time Out, and Group III winner Legally Bay the dam of Merchant Navy and Jolie Bay.

Montsegur has an unraced two-year-old sister to Siege named Heresy and a yearling colt by Fastnet Rock, who has already been named Pereille.

After foaling another Fastnet Rock colt last spring, Montsegur was covered by Shamardal's triple Group 1 winning son Blue Point (IRE).

For those in the market for a Street Boss (IRE), the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale is the place to be.

The son of Street Cry (IRE) has 13 yearlings catalogued.
