Breednet Premier Coverage - What's Not in the Catalogue

Sponsored Content - by Tara Madgwick - Thursday February 25

There is absolutely no trick to buying a horse at the 2021 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale - The four session auction kicks off at 10am on Sunday and features over 800 yearlings which, based on last year’s figures, range in price from $725,000 to $6,000.

Importantly, the sale is regarded as one of the most successful in Australia, a reputation which has only grown in the last 12 months via the deeds of graduates such as Nature Strip, Gytrash, Ole Kirk and September Run.

But here’s the difficult part … how do you find the (Gy)trash among the other treasures?

The printed catalogue is the obvious place to start and if you see someone at the sales complex over the next few days without a catalogue, they are more than likely selling the coffee.

But the catalogue will only take you so far: and that’s where Breednet comes in – the premier source for finding a Premier winner.

For starters, the catalogue was printed a couple of months ago and even before it arrived in your mailbox, much of the information is out of date.

Rich Hips is one of several recent stakes-winners with siblings to be offered at Inglis Premier.

Conveniently, Inglis supply online ‘updates’ by individual lots but Breednet lists all of the latest results pertaining to Premier entries: for instance, Lot 23 is a half sister to Saturday’s Group 2 Angus Armanasco winner, Yes Baby Yes, while Lot 323 is a half to Rich Hips who won the Group 3 Mannerism on the same program. In the catalogue, Mallory – the three quarter sister to Lot 233 – is only listed as stakes placed but she won the Group 3 Widden Stud late last month. An important update. (Go here.)

Breednet lists the sales results of all progeny from a given mare too. Dinkum Diamond has a Zoustar colt (Lot 580) entered and it’s interesting to note that her first foal sold for $100,000, the second for $200,000 and third for $320,000. (Go here.)

The Premier has long been regarded as a tremendous source for weanlings turned over as yearlings and Breednet has a full list of pinhooks for the sale: and one might wonder – given the success of Written Tycoon over the last six months – whether his colt from Racy (Lot 269) sells for considerably more than the $25,000 Maluka Thoroughbreds paid for him at the 2020 Inglis Weanling Sale. (Go here.)

Aside from a full ‘gallery’ of yearlings by First Season Sires (Go here.) – including Merchant Navy and Hellbent (whose first yearlings sold up to $500,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions) – Breednet has a list of the all-important nicks for every lot in the sale.

It’s a handy tool if you’re looking for yearlings out of daughters by, say, Fastnet Rock. A Champion Australian Sire who produced three stakes winners on the weekend, he is likewise a highly accomplished broodmare sire as Premier graduates such as Santa Ana Lane and Gytrash would attest.

While Fastnet Rock has two of his own in the Premier, there are 16 other sires represented with yearlings out of Fastnet Rock mares … notably highly successful crosses with sires such as Pierro (2 stakes winners), More Than Ready (2), Savabeel (2), I Am Invincible (1) and Nicconi (1).

A simple click on the Pierro / Fastnet Rock ‘nick’, for example, shows that the cross has produced 23 winners from 38 runners including multiple Group winner Rock and 2YO stakes winners Untamed.(Go here.)
