Snitzel Filly Macroura Captures Typhoon Tracy Stakes

Mark Smith - Friday February 19

Winless in four starts since capturing the Listed Woodlands Stakes at Rosehill as a two-year-old last May, the Snitzel filly Macroura did best in a driving finish to Friday nights Group III Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

Under a perfectly times ride by Jamie Kah, the  Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained filly defeated the Toronado (IRE) filly Rainbiel by a neck with the I Am Invincible filly Supreme Idea a half-head back in third.

“Jamie did the right thing by sitting off the leader who was going quite quick. She was very patient at the top of the straight, just letting her go through her gears, which she is so good at,” Eustice said.

“Fair play to the filly she was incredibly tough.

“She’s had feet issues so she has been training without shoes. She has been down at the beach and that has helped.

“She clearly likes the Valley and she is a very valuable filly now.

“I think fresh over 1200m is where she is at. She will try 1400m at some stage.”

Bred and part-owned by bred by Aquis Farm, Macroura advances her record to four wins and three thirds from eight starts with earnings of $303,090.

Macroura is the first foal and only winner to date out of the winning Zabeel mare Zenaida, a half-sister to the Horse of the Year in NZ in 2009-10, Vosne Romanee (Electronic Zone).

Zenaida has a 2yo colt by Exceed And Excel named Noble Exception who failed to make his $400,000 reserve at the 2020 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He is in training with Nick Olive in Canberra.

Zenaida has a yearling filly by Invader. After missing to that stallion in 2019, she was covered by Dubious last spring.

Macroura has an interesting back story. She was the subject of a Best On Breeding last June (Read it here).
