Juvenile Trial Watch – Warwick Farm

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday December 30

Barrier trials on the polytrack at Warwick Farm on Wednesday morning produced a couple of blue-blooded juvenile winners from the powerful Godolphin team.

The James Cummings trained Shamardal filly Larkspur Run was having her third trial and second this preparation.

She was ridden quietly from an outside gate by Rachel King and always looked to be under a hold when cruising up out wide to win drawing away by three-quarters of a length over the well named colt Bil Colyns (Not a Single Doubt x Theatre Fan).

A homebred for Godolphin, Larkspur run is the second named foal for Aspen, a winning half-sister by Exceed and Excel to Group II winner Ghisoni from Group II winner Portillo.

Aspen started her stud career in Europe for Darley and her first foal by Dark Angel, a filly called Stormy Mountain is a two time winner in France and the UK.

Aspen was returned to Australia in foal to Shamardal with Larkspur Run the result of that mating. She has since produced two fillies by Ghisoni’s sire Lonhro.

There are just four two year-olds in Australia by Darley’s much missed champion sire Shamardal, who died earlier this year in April. They are all fillies bred and owned by Godolphin.

Champion sire Shamardal has just four Australian 2YO's for this season and all are Godolphin bred and owned fillies.

The second heat was won by Larkspur Run’s stablemate Telluride in similar fashion. She settled back for Rachel King and hit the line full of running under a hold to win by a head.

Telluride is from the last Australian conceived crop of foals by Darley shuttler Medaglia D’Oro (USA) and is bred on a very successful nick being from Lonhro mare Calaverite. This nick has produced 10 winners from 14 runners and four of those winners are the stakes-winners Tenley, Shards, Multaja and Veranillo.

Telluride is the second foal of Listed ATC Gimcrack Stakes winner Calaverite, a half-sister to Group II winners Gold Rush and Gold Fever from Group II winner Gold Rocks.

Calaverite has a yearling colt to follow by Astern and a colt foal by Exceed and Excel.
