One to Watch – Yarra Glen

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday December 29

A blue-blooded Vancouver filly that made $625,000 as a weanling was an easy pick for a ‘One to Watch’ when she won on debut at Yarra Glen on Tuesday.

Alternate was among the top sellers at the 2018 MM National Weanling Sale.

Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, three year-old filly Alternate was favourite for the 1200m maiden and got the job done with a minimum of fuss, powering clear at the finish to win by half a length.

Alternate carries the colours of her breeder China Horse Club and was consigned to the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale by Coolmore to dissolve a partnership between the two global breeders.

She is a half-sister to $3.4million earning four time Group I winner Preferment and Group III winner Rezoned being the sixth winner from seven foals to race from terrific producer Better Alternative.

Better Alternative was also sold at the same sale, snatched up by Yulong for $750,000. She has a yearling colt for them by Savabeel and has a filly foal by Yulong’s foundation sire Grunt.

Alternate looks a promising type for Vancouver, who has 11 entries for Magic Millions 2021
